WHAT IS A CAM?

 
Cam stands for Conditional Access Module and is an electronic device that incorporates a slot for a viewing card. The Cam and Card can then be inserted into a Satellite receiver with an appropriate Common Interface Slot to allow the receiver to view encrypted pay channels.
 
 
Different broadcasters may use a variety of different encryptions such as Viaccess, Irdeto, Conax, NDS Videoguard amongst a few others. For most of these services a cam is available to accept the card of your choice although in the case of some broadcasters such as Sky you may need to purchase a receiver with an embedded cam that is designed to work pacifically for that service, although a specialised Dragon CAM may be able to emulate the encryption.
 
 
As well as the Dragon CAM other more specialised CAMs are available popular with enthusiasts due to being programmable via a PC or Laptop to suit different applications. Although not as popular now as they used to be CAMS such as the Dragon and Diablo are still in use today and are being supported by third party software. In addition to the CAM you will require a programmer to connect to your PC to allow the transfer of files to upgrade the CAM with the latest software available. Duolabs produce a multi-programmer called a Cas III that does just that although some technical knowledge is required.
